Today I took Fuzzy out for a walk. I perched him on my IV pump and walked around the unit. Every person I passed smiled or talked to me. I told them I was taking my dog out for a walk. It may seems silly, but silly little things like this are great conversation starters or distractions for people. It gets really boring walking the unit, but the addition of a dog to my IV poll made my last few laps a little more fun and interesting.
I’m feeling pretty good. I am still having some lower right quadrant pain (that is the site were the stomach was removed) and the JP drain isn’t super comfortable, but aside from that I’m doing well. I am able to leave as soon as the logistics can be worked out for my TPN. I anticipate they will be able to get orders to Nutrishare by this afternoon and I will be able to get my TPN at the hotel tomorrow. A positive update on the NPO (nothing by mouth) status… My doctor said that I can continue with ice, small sips of water for meds, and some hard candy and gum. I also asked if I could eat salt. He looked at me a little funny and then said sure, that is fine. Then he continued to talk about the NPO period which I originally thought was 6 weeks and now he is saying 6-8 weeks. He will keep the JP drain in until I come back for a follow-up with him October 4th and at that point decide when it is safe to re-introduce food and drinks.
